Newly elected President Donald Trump has been in the limelight for a majority of his life, but not nearly as much as in the past year. He has been faced with more criticism, slander and judgement than ever before.
The life of a presidential candidate is stressful and straining, and therefore, while I don’t agree with much of Trump’s platform and the way he conducts himself on social media, I can’t blame him for being defensive when it comes to dealing with the media.
President Trump has set off an offensive on social media. He has made statements about many mainstream media outlets calling CNN “disgusting,” The New York Times “fake news,” and The Washington Post “dishonest.”
Many of Trump’s claims are false. Journalists are doing their job, which is reporting the news, whether it fits the president’s agenda or not. President Trump seems to believe that the media is out to get him and is against him, conservative and liberal media alike.
The way Trump conducts himself on social media is very unorthodox compared to other politicians, let alone a president. He uses it to vent and to express his opinions, despite how absurd they may be. These are some Tweets that were actually put out by Donald Trump’s official Twitter account:
“An ‘extremely credible source’ has called my office and told me that Barack Obama’s birth certificate is a fraud.”
“Robert Pattinson should not take back Kristen Stewart. She cheated on him like a dog & will do it again – just watch. He can do much better!”
“Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him ‘groveling’ when he totally changed a 16-year-old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”
These Tweets show the unprofessional nature of how our president conducts himself online and just misguided his statements are. Despite this, Trump has found that much of his base likes that he speaks his mind and that he isn’t “politically correct.”
The fact that he is a political outsider and handles himself accordingly online panders to many of his supporters. I believe President Trump is fully aware what he is doing and knows that no matter how ridiculous he sounds, his base will continue to support him.
